93/94 Third XI vs 07/08 Third XI
Who would win a match between these two great sides?
Phil Rogers........v....Chris Devoil
Mark Brennan....v.....Jason Peoples
Peter Caulfield...v.....Chris Totton
Peter Alldis........v....Justin Noble
Damien Fiolet.....v....Tony Heazlewood
Michael Krig.......v....Shaun Patten
Mick Alldis.........v....Peter Caulfield
Greg Bliss..........v....James Diery
Adam McCann....v....Grant Caulfield
Dennis Caulfield..v....Peter Griffiths
Jim Timberlake....v....Paul O'Donoghue
The current day front runners would have a bit more trouble against the 94 premiership bowling line up. Nothing like the mediocre attacks they're smashing around these days. Hard to see us losing more than a few wickets either.
My tip: 93/94 team would win outright on the first day.

Re: 93/94 Third XI vs 07/08 Third XI
interesting topic there big jim so i thought it was worthy of me using the forum for the first time. to say the 93/94 XI would win outright on the first day i found almost amusing and a little incorrect. especially when you break it down player by player.
The current side clearly has a better opening partnership. cdv and $2 peeps average about 70 as openers which is a little more than phil rogers and mark brennen. (and didnt phil make a golden duck in the grand final of 93/94?) clearly I am a better number 3 than jack! bear V nobby is an interesting one. bear, a club legend and one of the best 3rds players ever in the gca. Nobby, mcmahon medalist and a 1st premiership player. i would call these 2 a draw. (altho nobby cant catch!) tone the bone has clearly got fize covered with the bat. Mick krig would be infront of general by a nose! kriggys record is pretty impressive.
the spin bowlers is an interesting one too. crow and blissy V jack and ricey. ricey has got blissy covered with the bat and ball. much more consistent spinner and a handy middle order batsman. and based on stats crow would be in front of jack but not by much. spain is a much better bowler than adam 'maddog' mccann. and i would probably rate you big jim just in front of paul o'donohue. mic alldis would then match up with griffo just because they are the last 2 left. but i am obviously a better keeper than him and probably everyone else!
so there for it would be a win to the current day dream team 7 - 3 with one lot of players drawing, bear and nob.
and the current day side is much better captoned than the rabble that played in the early '90's too!!!!!!
i missed the 93/94 premiership due to injury (you broke my finger big jim in the first final) so had i have been named in there side it would probably swing the favour over to them!

93/94 3rds vs 2007/08 3rds
I was very interested to hear Tott's comments on the respective strengths and weaknesses of the 2 teams and, having played in both teams, I feel I am the best qualified to give an honest assessment. I think that the current team probably would just have the edge in batting depth and that the 93/94 team would definitely have the better bowlers with 2 genuine strike bowlers (Jack and Jim) who could bowl plenty of overs at that time, and the wily club leading wicket taker Crow. The current team has a lot of 'pretty' boys who have not really been tested for the past 6 games, and the general standard of all grades of GCA cricket has dropped since Geelong were admitted to VCA cricket in 1994. I would prefer not to go into personal comparisons of the respective players but I would say that the 93/94 team would certainly match up evenly on a person to person basis. It would be a great game and I would probably prefer to be on the 93/94 side because I was still bowling fairly quickly at that time, rather than the 'faggoty' off spin I have no choice but to bowl these days. To finish I should point out that the 93/94 team were premiers and that the current team has not achieved anything as yet !

If it was possible I would love to sit back on a lazy saturday arvo with a full esky and watch these two teams go at it. Cricket would be the winner on the day

Be careful using 1st XI premierships to back yourself up Totts. Think you'll find the count is 8 to 4, and thats with both teams counting Jacks 3. Think we'd have you covered in McMahon medals too.
Jack made 50 odd in that GF, we'll see if you can do that this year...if you can get through the semi that is, unlike last year.
You may be right about your opening bats, but don't write Phils 1st XI record off. Prepared to give you Peeps over Rusty Brennan.
Think you've been harsh on Blissy too. Ricey probably a slightly better bat, Blissys a better bowler.
This would be better:
Phil Rogers........v....Chris Devoil Draw
Mark Brennan....v.....Jason Peoples Peeps
Peter Caulfield...v.....Chris Totton Jack
Peter Alldis........v....Justin Noble Bear
Damien Fiolet.....v....Tony Heazlewood Tony
Michael Krig.......v....Shaun Patten Kriggy
Mick Alldis.........v....Peter Caulfield Jack
Greg Bliss..........v....James Diery Draw
Adam McCann....v....Grant Caulfield Draw
Dennis Caulfield..v....Peter Griffiths Crow
Jim Timberlake....v....Paul O'Donoghue Jim
93/94 win 5 - 3 with 3 draws.
Ok perhaps not outright on the first day, but a sweet victory.

Re: 93/94 Third XI vs 07/08 Third XI
I think you need to look at where the players were at the time. Sure Big Jim went on to win Mcmahon's and 1st XI premeirships however he was only on his way up at the time while some of the other big names were on the way out.
Jack was a genuine firsts player playing in the thirds however the rest were pretty much playing on merit.
Nob, Spaniard and TTB still have the goods to play ones however circumstances prevent them from doing this. JD is also on his way back up.
The current team loses points for Tott's spelling of captained.
The past team loses points for having Nifty Regan as 12th man.
My verdict: to tight to call.

Ahhh, nice comparisons lads. But lets be honest, you have to compare the sides as they were at the time. Phil Rogers was washed up and Jim, Mad Dog and Blissy were just babies and have been over rated in the last few contributions... It was really only Jack and Bear who were anywhere near the peak of their powers, whereas the current side has a few in some pretty reasonable form. If we were playing 6ths and the old mob had to retire Bear at 50, then we'd be a massive chance. But i'm not sure if our bowling has enough depth or strike power in a 75 over contest. Bear could bat for 60 overs, post a lazy 180 and then hit the bar for 40 pots... setting up a win for the old timers. However, in a one dayer, if we could see off Jack's 10 overs and Bear could only make fiddy, then it would be all over. Peeps, Ravi and TTB would start smashing Jim, Crow and the dog into the kindergarten...just for fun. But they have the premiership medallions around their necks and this years mob are still waiting to prove themselves when the heat is on. I think we should rebirth this topic in April...
Oh and for the record, the old timers were definately better in the field.

Did anyone notice the thirds batting order on Saturday? Poor little Chrissy didn't like the idea of batting at 3 with just a few overs remaining on day one, so he sent Jack in to bat instead. A truly pathetic show of leadership by Totts. It confirms what many have been saying: Totts may be the captain on paper, but Jack is the spiritual leader of that side, and the one the players look up to, and look to for inspiration when the going gets tough.
Ricey in particular was scathing in his appraisal of Totts cowardly efforts. Good on ya Ricey for risking your spot in the side to tell it how it is.
Re: 93/94 Third XI vs 07/08 Third XI
jim be very careful of putting words in peoples mouths on this forum. i said no such things. leading a side that contains elder and more experienced cricketers is pretty difficult telling from experience and therefore i would ask u to get behind chris.

Its a clear win for the newbies on paper, but surely things will change when you consider the Old Time Premiers circa 93 vs the current side which we will take into the first final... No Peeps, TTB and Spaniard.
My money's on the old timers...

3rd Eleven .... whos better?
interesting topic.... would the game be played on malthoid or synthetic grass? Perhaps we should play on the turf to be fair to both teams.... I reckon you should track the teams down and have a 20/20 game on a Sunday early in the 08/09 season ... only way to settle it!!!
we might have some difficulty getting Bear away from the bar though... so we had better bat first....
Cheers, Mick Alldis
